The emergence of markets for carbon-dioxide emissions, signalled by the European Union's launch of an emission-trading scheme in 2005, has had a knock-on effect for executive education courses on anticipated trade.
Accordingly, the University of Zurich now offers a one-semester course designed to give graduate students the knowledge and the theoretical tools for investigating the economic, financial and managerial impacts of market-based environmental policies such as the European Emission Trading Scheme and the Kyoto protocol. This course attempts to fill the increasing demand for graduate and post-graduate level positions. The Environmental Finance course should prepare students for further study in related areas, and equip them with the knowledge needed to begin working professionally in the environmental finance industry, banks, brokerage and in related governmental organizations.
The course will be a combination of theory, case studies and informal seminars with representatives from industry, the financial sector (such as banks and (re)-insurance companies), governmental
organizations and NGOs. As such it will
Course will usually finish at 4pm, with possible exceptions of seminars from 4 to 5 pm.
Simulation of Carbon markets
For the purpose of the course, we have developed a unique carbon trading simulation tool enabling the recreation of the conditions experienced on day-to-day carbon exchanges. For more info, see the slides below:

What our students have to say about the course:
"Very interesting in a very comfortable,
familiar ambience. It covered topics, I've never heard of, such as carbon
trading and the EU Emission Trading Scheme"
"The course provided sound theoretical and practical knowledge of the
workings of emmissions trading as a mechanism to address GHG reduction.
Students were given tools to venture into the quantitative analysis of this
field. My interest was also aroused to explore deeper the workings of the
field. Overall, a very professional job performed to a high standard"
"This course is not only for finance students but also for business administration, environmental studies and students of other related fields of study. Without doubt one of the most interesting courses currently offered: Two thumbs up!"
